Carryover/Home Practice

“Speech once or twice a week isn’t going to build that new habit for motor learning for our kiddos. We need to get that movement consistent and on “autopilot” ! This is why pratice is so important. If I were to shoot baskets in my driveway for 1 hr a week, I would not get that movement of shooting a basket as a motor plan very well. But if I did that EVERY DAY, even if it was just a five minutes, I’d have a much better chance. Sand timers are a great visual for kids to use and see how long they are practicing their sounds (practicing the sound the right way) and they are often available in big packs online. I love 💕giving timers to my families to put in their "speech practice bins" for carryover practice. These timers 🕛 are 2 minutes - TWO MINUTES OF PRACTICE EVERY NIGHT! That is a lot of sound repetition!” (click photo to read more)

Narrative Assessment

“…. Many times, standardized narrative assessments over inflate a child's narrative/storytelling skills and it's critical we get a true look at this skill since it's widely known that narrative retelling give us information about a student's verbal expression. It helps us see various language features more clearly like organization and syntax... and pragmatics (part of a social pragmatic language disorder includes having trouble with storytelling and conversation)”

So what do we do? Get going with checking out some wordless picture books from your library and check out the many free resources about narrative development!” (click photo to read more)
